Bald Eagle Activity Sheet

Meet the powerful bird of prey known for its white head, hooked yellow beak, huge wings, and fish-catching skills.

About

The bald eagle is a large bird of prey found in North America. Adult bald eagles are easy to recognize because they have a white head and tail, a dark brown body, a yellow hooked beak, and strong yellow feet with sharp talons. Young bald eagles look mostly brown and do not get their bright white head and tail until they are several years old.

Bald eagles often live near lakes, rivers, coasts, and wetlands where fish are available. They are skilled fliers and hunters, but they also scavenge when food is available. Their large nests, called aeries, are usually built high in tall trees or on cliffs and may be used and repaired year after year.

The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States and is also an important wildlife recovery story. After pesticides, habitat loss, and hunting caused serious declines, protection efforts helped bald eagle populations grow again in many areas.

History & Culture

The bald eagle became the national emblem of the United States in 1782. Its image appears on seals, coins, flags, and many official symbols because it is associated with strength, freedom, and wild landscapes.

In the twentieth century, bald eagles were harmed by the pesticide DDT, which made eggshells too thin for many chicks to survive. Laws protecting eagles, cleaner waterways, habitat protection, and the ban of DDT helped the species recover. Today, bald eagles remind people that conservation can make a real difference.
