Create My OwnThe White Rhinoceros
Meet a huge grass-eating rhinoceros with two horns, a broad mouth, and an important conservation story.
About
The white rhinoceros is one of the largest land mammals on Earth. It has a massive body, thick gray skin, two horns, and a wide, square-shaped mouth. That broad mouth is perfect for grazing on grasses, which is why white rhinos are often found in open grasslands and savannas.
White rhinoceroses usually spend much of the day eating, resting, and moving slowly through their habitat. Their ears can swivel to listen for sounds, and their strong sense of smell helps them understand what is nearby. Even though they look heavy and slow, rhinos can move quickly when they need to.
There are two kinds, or subspecies, of white rhinoceros: the southern white rhinoceros and the northern white rhinoceros. Southern white rhinos are a major conservation recovery story, while northern white rhinos are extremely rare. Protecting rhinos means protecting habitat, stopping poaching, and helping people value wildlife alive in the wild.
History & Culture
White rhinoceroses once lived across parts of Africa, but hunting, habitat loss, and the illegal trade in rhino horn caused their numbers to fall. Conservation programs, protected areas, anti-poaching work, and careful wildlife management helped southern white rhinos recover from very low numbers.
The northern white rhinoceros has a much sadder modern history, with only a tiny number surviving under human care. Its story shows why conservation work matters before a species reaches the edge of extinction.
Fun Facts
White rhinos are not actually white; their name may come from a word describing their wide mouth.
A white rhinoceros has a broad, square lip that helps it graze on grass.
White rhinos have two horns made of keratin, the same material found in human fingernails.
Despite their size, rhinos can run surprisingly fast for short distances.

Activities & Discussion
- 1
Rhino Feature Labels
Label the rhino's two horns, broad mouth, thick skin, ears, and strong legs. Write one short note about how each feature helps it survive.
- 2
Savanna Grazing Scene
Draw grasses, shrubs, birds, and open sky around the rhinoceros. Add a patch of short grass where the rhino has been grazing.
- 3
Conservation Poster
Create a small poster that encourages people to protect rhinos. Include one picture symbol, one action word, and one reason rhinos matter.
