The Pine Marten

Discover a nimble forest hunter with a long body, rounded ears, and a golden throat patch.

About

The pine marten is a small, agile mammal related to weasels, otters, and fishers. It has a slender body, short legs, rounded ears, sharp claws, and a long bushy tail. Many pine martens have a creamy yellow or orange patch on the throat and chest.

Pine martens are excellent climbers, but they also travel on the ground while searching for food. They may eat small mammals, birds, insects, eggs, berries, and carrion, which makes them flexible forest omnivores. Dense forests with hollow trees, logs, and rocky spaces can provide shelter and den sites.

Because pine martens are shy and quick, people may see their tracks more often than the animal itself. Learning about their shape, tracks, and habitat helps us understand the hidden activity that happens in forests.

History & Culture

Pine martens have been part of northern and mountain forest ecosystems for generations. Their soft fur once made them heavily trapped in some regions, which caused populations to shrink in places.

Today, pine martens are often discussed in connection with forest conservation, habitat connections, and wildlife recovery. Protecting mature forests, den sites, and travel corridors can help these secretive animals survive.
