Snow Igloo Activity Sheet

Discover how packed snow blocks can form a dome-shaped shelter that stays surprisingly protective in cold weather.

About

An igloo is a dome-shaped shelter made from blocks of compacted snow. Snow may seem cold, but packed snow can trap air, and trapped air helps slow the movement of heat. That insulating quality can make the inside of an igloo much more protected than the windy winter air outside.

Traditional igloos are carefully built by cutting blocks of firm snow and arranging them in a spiral that curves inward to form a dome. A small entrance tunnel can help block wind, while a vent hole allows fresh air to move through safely.

Igloos are strongly associated with Inuit knowledge and Arctic winter survival. They show how people can use local materials, careful design, and deep environmental understanding to create shelter in snowy places.

History & Culture

For generations, Inuit communities developed expert knowledge of snow, ice, weather, travel, clothing, tools, and shelter in Arctic environments. Igloos are one example of that knowledge, especially for temporary winter shelter while traveling or hunting.

Today, many people learn about igloos in school, museums, winter activities, and cultural lessons. It is important to describe them with respect, because they are part of real Arctic traditions and not just a snowy cartoon house.

Fun Facts

!

Igloos are made from compacted snow blocks, not ice cubes.

!

The dome shape helps spread weight and keeps the shelter stable.

!

Snow can insulate because tiny air spaces inside it slow heat loss.

!

A small entrance tunnel helps reduce wind blowing into the main shelter.

A Thought to Carry With You

"Smart design can turn simple materials into shelter, warmth, and safety."

Activities & Discussion

  • 1

    Build the Dome Pattern

Draw curved rows of snow blocks around the igloo. Make the blocks smaller near the top to show how the dome closes.

  • 2

    Shelter Labels

Label the dome, snow blocks, entrance tunnel, vent hole, and snowy ground. Add one sentence explaining how snow can insulate.

  • 3

    Arctic Scene

Add respectful winter details around the igloo, such as snowdrifts, stars, northern lights, sled tracks, or distant hills.
